Multidisciplinary Team Completes Three Major Surgeries in 15 Days, Redefining Patient Care in Organ Transplantation
Hyderabad, Telangana, September 19, 2025 – Gleneagles Hospitals proudly announces the successful execution of three highly complex lung transplant surgeries in a record 15-day period, marking a significant milestone in Indian medical practice. The surgeries, performed across Hyderabad, Chennai and Banglore, involved patients with severe lung conditions, including patients with post-tuberculosis lung destruction and post-liver transplant respiratory distress. Thanks to the tireless collaboration of our multidisciplinary transplant team, all three patients are recovering well, with one already fit for discharge after years of dependency on oxygen.
The advanced procedures were led by Dr. Balasubramanyam Govini, who managed a particularly challenging case with intricate vascular and bronchial anastomosis completed in less than three hours. The team traversed over 600 kilometres to ensure timely coordination and swift transport of donor organs, significantly reducing ischemic time and maximizing patient survival chances.
Dr. Balasubramanyam Govini, Lead Lung Transplant Surgeon, Gleneagles Hospitals said, “Our team’s dedication to innovation and patient-centric care made these successful transplants possible. Completing a complex anastomosis in record time is a testament to our surgical expertise and collective commitment to excellence”
Dr. Apar Jindal, Director Lung Transplant programme, Gleneagles Hospitals, said, “We are profoundly grateful to the donor families whose courage and compassion, even in moments of immense personal grief, have gifted our patients the invaluable chance to breathe freely again. Their act of selflessness does not just save lives; it restores hope to entire families who had almost given up”
Dr. Tapaswi Krishna, Transplant Pulmonologist, said, “These outcomes reflect the strength of our collaborative model, including surgeons, respiratory therapists, anaesthetists, and support staff. We strive to deliver every patient the opportunity to return home oxygen-free and hopeful for a better quality of life.”
Dr. Obul Reddy, Consultant Pulmonologist, stresses the importance of good preoperative management , donor management protocols and post-operative care at our institute which is of paramount importance to the patient.
A donor family member shared, “Even in our moment of loss, we found strength in knowing that our loved one’s legacy would live on by helping another person breathe freely again. The thought that this act of generosity has the power to transform not just the life of one patient, but also bring renewed joy and relief to an entire family, gives us immense hope and peace.”
These achievements highlight Gleneagles Hospital’s position at the forefront of advanced organ transplantation in India. Families, such as the wife of one recipient who played a vital role in her husband’s pre-surgical well-being, have deeply contributed to patient recovery.
