YouTube will block all anti-vaccine content, moving beyond its ban on false information about the COVID vaccines to include content that contains misinformation about other approved vaccines, it said in a blog post on Wednesday.

Examples of content that won’t be allowed on YouTube include claims that the flu vaccine causes infertility and that the MMR shot, which protects against measles, mumps, and rubella, can cause autism, according to YouTube’s policies.

The online video company owned by Alphabet is also banning channels associated with several prominent anti-vaccine activists including Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Joseph Mercola, a YouTube spokesperson said.

A press email for Mercola’s website said in a statement: “We are united across the world, we will not live in fear, we will stand together and restore our freedoms.”

Kennedy said in a statement: “There is no instance in history when censorship and secrecy has advanced either democracy or public health.”

The moves come as YouTube and other tech giants like Facebook and Twitter have been criticised for not doing enough to stop the spread of false health information on their sites.

But even as YouTube takes a tougher stance on misinformation, it faces backlash around the world. On Tuesday, Russian state-backed broadcaster RT’s German-language channels were deleted from YouTube, as the company said the channels had breached its COVID-19 misinformation policy.

Russia on Wednesday called the move “unprecedented information aggression,” and threatened to block YouTube.

Gartner Survey Reveals Nearly Half of Organizations Will Institute Vaccine Mandates https://www.technologyforyou.org/gartner-survey-reveals-nearly-half-of-organizations-will-institute-vaccine-mandates/ https://www.technologyforyou.org/gartner-survey-reveals-nearly-half-of-organizations-will-institute-vaccine-mandates/#respond Mon, 27 Sep 2021 06:07:20 +0000 https://www.technologyforyou.org/?p=182768

Most Organizations Still Trying to Determine a Testing Strategy for Unvaccinated Employees

Forty-six percent of organizations now plan to institute a vaccine mandate where legally permissible, according to a survey by Gartner, Inc. On September 15, 2021, Gartner polled 272 legal, compliance and HR executives following new federal guidance on vaccine mandates for health workers and updated Occupational, Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations on vaccine and testing requirements for employees.

“The new federal guidance, as well as the ongoing surge in COVID-19 cases due to the Delta wave, have combined to shift executive opinion on vaccine mandates significantly since the beginning of the year,” said Chris Audet, senior director, research, in the Gartner Legal & Compliance practice. “It is likely that we will see a clear majority of firms instituting mandates of some kind by the end of the year, considering that 36% of respondents are still unsure of their organization’s plans.”

The new survey data on vaccine mandates showed that only 17% of survey respondents reported that they will not require vaccine mandates (see Figure 1).

“The latest federal guidance gives private sector employers the ability to shift the responsibility for requiring vaccination from the organization to the government,” said Brian Kropp, chief of research in the Gartner HR practice. “This shift in responsibility makes it easier for companies to implement a vaccine mandate.”

No Consensus on Testing Strategy

There is little consensus among executives on how their organizations will address remaining unvaccinated employees and the details of specific testing strategies. Fifteen percent of executives said their organizations will terminate non-compliant employees, with organizations split on whether they will administer some form of on-site testing, utilize third-party testing services, or require employees to be responsible for their own testing.

The polling data also revealed significant concerns among executives about the consequences of new mandates, even as they move towards implementing the policies in greater numbers. Sixty-nine percent of respondents feared a vaccine mandate will spur employee turnover due to resignations or terminations. Additionally, more than half of respondents feared the impact on company culture and employee morale, and they had general concerns on managing employees who refused the vaccine without an approved exemption.

“While organizational leaders feel more confident in setting vaccine and testing policies in light of new developments, much of their original hesitancy about the drawbacks of such policies remain,” said Audet. “Legal and compliance leaders will need to think through the implications of assuming responsibility for employee health data with related administrative work, along with policies to limit confrontation and disruptions related to non-compliant employees.”

COVID-19 accelerates mobile wallet adoption across Asia-Pacific, finds GlobalData https://www.technologyforyou.org/covid-19-accelerates-mobile-wallet-adoption-across-asia-pacific-finds-globaldata/ https://www.technologyforyou.org/covid-19-accelerates-mobile-wallet-adoption-across-asia-pacific-finds-globaldata/#respond Tue, 21 Sep 2021 12:08:04 +0000 https://www.technologyforyou.org/?p=182265

APAC markets like China and India have been aggressively promoting mobile wallets, putting them in place far ahead than their Western counterparts. Other markets within the region are also catching up with countries like Thailand and Vietnam now emerging as the top adopters of mobile wallets globally.

According to the latest GlobalData’s 2021 Financial Services Consumer Survey*, Thailand emerged as top country globally in terms of mobile wallet adoption with 93.7% survey respondents indicating that they had a mobile wallet and used it in a shop in the past 12 months. Thailand is followed by other Asian markets like Vietnam, India, and China.

Notably, the adoption level in the region is much higher compared to many of the developed markets such as the US and the UK despite widespread smartphone adoption in these countries, with adoption level standing only at 42.8% and 36.5%, respectively.

Ravi Sharma, Lead Banking and Payments Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “The availability of low-cost smartphones, rising Internet penetration, growing awareness of mobile payments and the proliferation of mobile wallets has resulted in Asian countries shifting from cash transactions to mobile wallet payments. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has further accelerated this trend as consumers are increasingly switching from cash to digital mode of payments, with mobile wallet being the major beneficiary.”

These wallets are now increasingly becoming ‘mainstream’ payments and widely used for day-to-day transactions at supermarkets, grocery stores, street vendors, tea stalls, fuel stations, and even inside taxis and auto-rickshaws.

The high adoption of QR code-based payments has been the major driver for mobile wallet adoption in the region. While consumers benefit from the convenience and pricing benefits (cashback/discounts), it is the ‘cost-effectiveness’ that appeals to the merchants as the costs associated with mobile wallet acceptance including setting-up infrastructure (e.g. QR code sticker) and transaction fees is much lower compared to traditional card-based payment system.

The emergence of instant payments in the region is expected to further push mobile wallet usage. Instant payments, which were initially developed to facilitate real time fund transfers between bank accounts, are now being extended to merchant payments, with mobile devices now being the primary form factor facilitating this type of payment.

Unified Payments Interface (UPI), an instant payment system in India, for instance, allows individuals to make instant payments to merchants through their mobile banking app or mobile wallets such as Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm. Philipines’ InstaPay and Singapore’s PayNow are other such examples, which facilitate instant merchant payments through mobile wallet/mobile banking apps.

With mobile wallet usage on rise, banks and payment service providers (PSPs) are all gearing up to get a piece of the mobile wallet pie. For instance, in China, WeChat Pay and Alipay are the most preferred mobile wallet brands with more than 75% of the respondents using these more often to pay in stores, according to our latest GlobalData’s 2021 Financial Services Consumer Survey.

Mr Sharma concludes: “The seamless payment experience offered by mobile wallets has redefined the way consumers carry out their day-to-day activities. Mobile wallet usage is all set to disrupt the overall consumer payment space in the region with gradual decline in cash usage, a trend that is more prevalent during the current COVID-19 crisis. Increasing smartphone penetration, widespread QR code infrastructure, introduction of instant payments, and rising consumer and merchant preference for electronic payments will continue to accelerate this trend.”

Global risk decreases a tad in Q2 2021 but remains at an elevated level, says GlobalData https://www.technologyforyou.org/global-risk-decreases-a-tad-in-q2-2021-but-remains-at-an-elevated-level-says-globaldata/ https://www.technologyforyou.org/global-risk-decreases-a-tad-in-q2-2021-but-remains-at-an-elevated-level-says-globaldata/#respond Sat, 18 Sep 2021 05:56:41 +0000 https://www.technologyforyou.org/?p=182073

GlobalData’s report, ‘Global Risk Report Quarterly Update – Q2 2021’, finds that global risk decreased marginally to 42.74 out of 100 from 43.53 in Q1 2021.

Gargi Rao, Business Fundamentals Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “While this score is an improvement, it is much higher than the pre-pandemic level of 41.1 in Q4 2019. The implementation of prolonged fiscal policies, along with the procurement and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines across the globe, will be the drivers to reduce risk. Global risk depends on how governments will strategically overcome economic problems in terms of mounting public debts, fiscal deficits and reduce overall political risk.”

Europe – Protests, floods and fiscal concerns looms large

Europe remained the region with the lowest risk in Q2 2021, with a marginal decline in risk score to reach 33.7 by Q2 2021.

Protests against COVID-19 restrictions and rising radicalization increased political risk in Europe. This was not helped by July’s catastrophic floods, which caused deaths and widespread damage in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Switzerland.

Rao says: “The July 2021 floods resulted in extreme human and economic loss. Rapid changes to climate may indicate such flooding to occur frequently. Governments have pumped in immediate aid for flood victims, however, a strategic framework for disaster preparedness and risk management is required.”

Further, new stimulus measures are widening the deficit and further adding to the already high debt burden in Europe.

Rao comments: “Massive stimulus packages were announced by Italy worth 60.9% of its GDP as of September 2021, to support businesses, tourism sector workers, and boost cash distributions to the vulnerable. High borrowing rates by the government pushed up public debt and may deter growth prospects.”

Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany, and Finland continue to remain in the list of top 15 nations with the least risk in Q2 2021.

Rao notes: “Lowest risk countries were mainly from European and Asia Pacific regions in Q2 2021. On the other hand, African countries continued to remain in the high risk category in Q2 2021.”

Asia-Pacific – Geopolitical tensions among countries to have deeper impact

The Asia-Pacific region’s risk score decreased marginally in Q2 2021 over the previous quarter. However, rising geopolitical tensions – including the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, a military coup in Myanmar, ongoing South China Sea conflicts, and emergence of new variants of COVID-19 – pose risk.

Rao adds: “The Taliban takeover has aggravated multiple crises that already existed leading to thousands fleeing the country, freezing of funds from multilateral organizations and halting of key development projects, which is expected to have a grave impact on the Afghan economy. GlobalData projects the country’s real GDP to contract within the range of 12.4%-22.3% in 2021.”

Gargi also notes that the recent ratification of RCEP by Japan in June 2021, alongside China and South Korea, is set to boost economic integration and trade in the region.

According to GlobalData research, Singapore was the lowest-risk nation in Q2 2021.

Rao comments: “Singapore had very timely policies to combat COVID-19, which has benefitted the country well in terms of economic recovery.”

Americas – Vulnerability of Latin American countries continues

The Americas region was the second highest in terms of risk worldwide, with a score of 46.7 out of 100 in Q2 2021. Mexico, Chile, Canada, and the US registered strong recoveries in Q2 2021, however, rising discontent against the government; continuing political unrest in Venezuela, Haiti and Nicaragua; and Guerilla group activities in countries such as Colombia and Ecuador have had an impact.

Rao adds: “The US experienced a surge in employment as reopening initiatives, along with rising vaccination rates, boosted the confidence of the business community. Meanwhile, Latin American countries such as Argentina witnessed stagflation, while Brazil saw a resurgence of COVID-19 cases along with reinstatement of mobility restrictions.”

Middle East and Africa – Social conflict along with geopolitical turmoil weighs down growth prospects

The Middle East and Africa (MEA) region witnessed highest risk among all regions in Q2 2021, at 50.42 in Q2 2021. Communal unrest in poorer areas has resulted in an uneven vaccination rollout and volatile food prices.

Rao continues: “Economic recovery has been uneven among MEA countries. Those that are rich in oil resources have been less impacted due to the rebound of global demand, however, renewed conflict between Israel and Palestine – along with political upheaval in Iraq and Lebanon – may cloud any recovery.”

Libya, Mozambique, and Yemen were the countries regarded by GlobalData to have the highest risk in the MEA region.

Rao adds: “The Saudi-led coalition war in Yemen has been aggravated by the COVID-19 outbreak, mainly through economic and humanitarian challenges. On the other hand, Libya needs to reunify its fragmented economy to sustain economic growth in the medium-term.”

Vaccine tourism is a double-edged sword https://www.technologyforyou.org/vaccine-tourism-is-a-double-edged-sword/ https://www.technologyforyou.org/vaccine-tourism-is-a-double-edged-sword/#respond Mon, 13 Sep 2021 12:02:15 +0000 https://www.technologyforyou.org/?p=181537

GlobalData’s Q2 2021 consumer survey found that only 6% of global respondents were not concerned about the impact of COVID-19. The remaining 94% were ‘extremely’, ‘slightly’ or ‘quite’ concerned. With concerns high, the opportunity to get vaccinated has been seized by many. Lengthy delay or a general shortage of COVID-19 vaccines in some countries is leading tourists to travel to other destinations.

Johanna Bonhill-Smith, Travel & Tourism Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “The wealthiest people in poorer countries will now be able to access vaccines first as they can afford to travel. This raises the argument that countries promoting vaccine tourism could be donating excess vaccine doses instead of giving access to wealthy tourists.”

Certain US states, Russia, the Maldives, and Indonesia are some of the destinations that are currently offering vaccinations to tourists. Some travel agencies have taken the opportunity to promote vaccine tour packages as a way to boost revenue. In Russia, for example, three-week tour packages priced between US$1,500 to US$2,500, excluding the price of the plane ticket, include vaccinations. However, with many destinations worldwide still struggling with low vaccine supplies, this is raising the question of vaccine equity.

According to GlobalData’s COVID-19 Vaccination Dashboard, the Democratic Republic of the Congo administered 3.5 vaccinations per 1,000 people as of 25 August 2021. In comparison, the US had administered 1,115 vaccine doses per 1,000 people on the same date. This highlights there is already a stark gap between different countries, and many are being left behind.

Bonhill-Smith adds: “One positive of vaccine tourism is that it could play a role in travel’s restart after the COVID-19 pandemic brought the sector to its knees. Global international departures declined by -72.5% year-over-year (Y-o-Y) and domestic trips by -50.8% Y-o-Y, according to GlobalData’s databases. This demonstrates the severe effects of the pandemic and why destinations worldwide are eager for a travel restart.”

  • Health experts say at least 60% of world’s population needs to be vaccinated by 2022 to get the current pandemic under control – but 0.4% of doses administered in low-income countries
  • Majority would receive a booster shot, but think priority goes to people yet to have a full dose
  • Read the full report and learn more about global heath issues to be discussed our Sustainable Development Impact Summit
  • Geneva, Switzerland, 10 September 2021: A new survey found a majority of fully vaccinated adults would get a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot if offered, but think priority should be given to people who have not had a first dose.

The latest World Economic Forum/Ipsos survey was conducted at the end of August in 13 countries and included 9,521 adults under the age of 75, of whom nearly 6,000 had received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

The World Health Organization has called for a pause on COVID-19 vaccine booster to narrow the gap in vaccinations between countries.

Genya Dana, Head, Health & Healthcare at the World Economic Forum said: “It is vital we work to close the gap between those with access to vaccines and those without. COVID-19 highlighted how vaccination is by far the most effective public health intervention to protect populations from disease and it is crucial that robust vaccination infrastructure is deployed in every country on earth.

Dr Dana continued: “At least 60% of world’s population needs to be vaccinated by 2022 to get the current pandemic under control – but the issue of equity and access must be front and centre of this effort. With only 0.4% of current doses administered in low-income countries, this crisis will keep multiplying. We need to redouble our efforts to get vaccines to everyone who hasn’t had one yet.”

    Boosters likely needed

The survey shows a widespread belief that COVID-19 vaccine booster shots will be needed at least annually to maintain protection against the disease. The expectation was highest in Mexico, Brazil and the United Kingdom, but lowest in Russia.

The survey also showed that a majority of adults who have had two doses of COVID-19 vaccine would get a booster shot if they were offered. Intent to get a booster shot was highest in Brazil (96%), Mexico (93%) and China (90%) and lowest in Russia (62%) and Italy (66%).

About the survey: The survey was conducted by Ipsos on its Global Advisor online platform, August 26-30, 2021, among adults 18-74 years of age in Canada and the United States, and 16-74 in Australia, Brazil, China (mainland), France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

COVID-19 drags down aggregate revenue of top 50 APAC firms by 2.1% in 2020, reveals GlobalData https://www.technologyforyou.org/covid-19-drags-down-aggregate-revenue-of-top-50-apac-firms-by-2-1-in-2020-reveals-globaldata/ https://www.technologyforyou.org/covid-19-drags-down-aggregate-revenue-of-top-50-apac-firms-by-2-1-in-2020-reveals-globaldata/#respond Sat, 28 Aug 2021 03:21:41 +0000 https://www.technologyforyou.org/?p=179918 The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll on the financial performance of the top companies across the Asia-Pacific (APAC) in 2020. The year-on-year aggregate revenue of the top 50 APAC companies declined by 2.1% to $5,651.2bn in 2020, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

An analysis of GlobalData’s Company Interim Reports Database reveals that 21 companies out of the list reported a decline in their revenue, 20 could manage slow to moderate growth of up to 10%, and only nine companies experienced above 10% growth rate. The list included 29 companies from China, out of which 24 registered year-on-year growth.

Alisha Bajpai Singh, Company Profiles Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “The performance of most of the Chinese companies improved during the period, which mitigated the overall impact of the pandemic, which could have been worse.”

The consolidated revenue of the Chinese enterprises grew 0.4%, followed by Taiwan (5.2%). However, India, South Korea, and Japan reported a decline of (15.2%), (3.8%), and (6.6%), respectively.

Chinese retailing and construction firms drove the growth in the revenue, with 34.7% and 10.1% annual growth, respectively.

Ms Singh explains: “China’s economic recovery has been quicker than that of other countries, supported by its stringent and swift measures in controlling the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to the better performance of Chinese enterprises compared to others.”

Among the top 50, Alibaba posted the maximum growth of 40.7%, facilitated by strong performance from China commerce retail and cloud computing business segments.

Ms Singh continues: “Increase in average unit price per click and volumes of paid clicks, and substantial growth in gross merchandise value of online physical goods in China retail marketplace helped Alibaba achieve such an exceptional y-o-y revenue growth.”

Among the Japanese firms, only Dai-ichi Life Holdings Inc reported a growth of above 10%, due to higher investment income and reinsurance income; while Sony Corp could manage a moderate growth of 9%, supported by improvement in its financial services business.

In South Korea, Hyundai Motor and SK Inc were affected by the pandemic with a decline of 2.8% and 17.4% in revenue. However, Samsung Electronics was able to enhance its revenue because of accelerated sales of consumer electronics and semiconductor offerings.

On the sectoral basis, financial services topped the list with 15 companies, followed by technology and communication (8), oil and gas (7), construction, (7), automotive (5), retailing (4), and consumer (1), and others (3).

Ms Singh concludes: “The COVID-19 pandemic has forced companies across the APAC region to re-evaluate business strategies to capture new marketplace opportunities. As firms redefine success in the post-pandemic era, GlobalData foresees them developing a rapid response to support business continuity through the crisis and beyond.”

“Mix-and-match of vaccines will definitely not cause a safety issue”

“Wearing mask properly and actively encouraging everyone to get vaccinated are the two biggest weapons to control further waves”

Priya Abraham, National Institute of Virology Director speaks on scientific developments on COVID-19

ICMR-National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune has been working on a war-footing for the whole of last one year.  “2021 was a difficult but rewarding year for us”, said Ms. Priya Abraham, Director of ICMR-NIV, which has been at the forefront of scientific research on SARS-CoV-2 in the country. in an interview with India Science, the OTT channel of the Department of Science & Technology.

Giving a quick overview of vaccine development process carried out at the institute which has been at the forefront of scientific research on SARS-CoV-2 in the country, she explained: “We quickly isolated and gave a strain to Bharat Biotech International Limited (BBIL) by the end of April (2020), after which they developed a whole virion-inactivated vaccine in the month of May and gave us back for review.  We checked it for its complete inactivation, did its complete characterisation and started pre-clinical trials on hamsters and non-human primates, that is, monkeys. Those are very difficult experiments to do. These were conducted in our highest Bio-Safety Level-4 level containment facilities.  In the next phase, we assisted them in the Phase I, II and III clinical trials in areas such as diagnostic aspect and laboratory support”.

Here are some excerpts from the interview on the scientific developments related to COVID-19, an analysis on the future of the pandemic and some common queries related to the virus.

In which stage is the trial of Covaxin on children running and by when can we expect to have vaccine for children?

Presently, Phase II and III trials of COVAXIN are going on for children in the age group of 2-18 years. Hopefully, the results are going to be available very soon. The results will be presented to the regulators. So, by September or just after it, we may have COVID-19 vaccines for children. This apart, Zydus Cadila’s vaccine trial is also going on. This can also be applied for children and will be made available.

Apart from these, what other vaccines can be made available for our citizens?

Zydus Cadila’s vaccine will be the first DNA vaccine which will be available for use. Besides, there is Gennova Biopharmaceuticals Ltd.’s m-RNA vaccine, Biological-E vaccine, Serum Institute of India’s Novovax and, another interesting one – an intra-nasal vaccine developed by Bharat Biotech International Limited. This vaccine does not require a jab and can be delivered through nostrils.

Will any of the presently available vaccines be effective on Delta-Plus variant?

First of all, the Delta-plus variant is less likely to spread than the Delta variant itself. Mainly Delta variant is present in over 130 countries. It has spread all over the world and it is this variant which is highly transmissible. In NIV we have done studies on this variant. We have studied the antibodies produced in the bodies of vaccinated people and checked it against this variant. It has been found that efficacy of antibodies against this variant has been reduced two to three folds.  Yet, the vaccines are still protective against the variants. They may show a little less efficacy, but vaccines are very important to prevent serious forms of disease due to which patients may get hospitalized and even die. So, whatever the variant, vaccine is till now protective against all, including the Delta variant. So, there should not be any hesitancy at all.

Are we going to require a booster dose in the coming times? Is any study being conducted on this matter?

Studies on booster dose have been going on overseas and at least seven different vaccines have been tried out for booster dose. Now, WHO has put a stop to it till more countries catch up with vaccination. This is because there is an alarming vaccine gap between high-income and low-income countries. But, in future, recommendations for boosters will definitely come.

Are studies also on for mix and match of vaccines? Will it be beneficial for us?

There was a situation where inadvertently two different vaccines were given in two doses. We have tested those samples at NIV and found that the patients who received different vaccines in two doses were safe. No adverse effect was noted and immunogenicity was a little better. So, it is definitely not something which will cause a safety issue. We are studying this phenomenon and will be able to give more details in a few days’ time.

Has any new COVID-19 testing method emerged that gives better results and can be trusted more?

Hospitals and laboratories were overwhelmed by the huge number of cases during the second wave. Many of their staff members were infected. So, efficiency of testing had reduced during that time. There was a shortage of reagents also. All these affected the efficacy of testing. RT-PCR testing method is by itself only about 70% sensitive. But it is still recommended by WHO. But, in the future we may see easier and quicker ‘point-of-care’ tests where we need not send samples to labs.

Please tell us about ICMR developed RT-LAMP Test

RT-LAMP assay produced by ICMR is a cost-effective assay. It does not require expensive equipment or extensive training and can also be done at Primary Health Centres in districts. These kinds of quick and fast tests which can be done in technologically not so advanced places will become more popular in the future.

Self-testing kits have also come in markets now. Will it further pace up testing?

Self-testing kits are antigen testing kits and so, their sensitivity is inferior to RT-PCR method. The sensitivity is likely to be more in symptomatic patients.  But, for asymptomatic patients, the sensitivity will be less.

Can people infected by Bird-Flu or Zika Virus become susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection?

Bird Flu and Zika Virus are unrelated to Coronavirus. But one commonality between HINI Bird Flu or Swine Flu Virus and SARS-CoV-2 is that their spread is prevented by good use of masks, physical distancing, hand hygiene and cough etiquette. All these viruses spread through the respiratory route. Thus, by following COVID Appropriate Behaviour we can limit the spread of all these viruses. However, Zika Virus spreads through mosquito bites.

Do chances of COVID-19 infection increase during monsoon?

Yes, viral infections like Dengue, Chikangunya and Zika Virus infections that spread through mosquito bites are going to increase during monsoon. Accumulated water should not be kept in the surroundings as mosquitoes breed in it. It will be worse to have corona infection on top of these infections which spread through mosquito bites.

Many images of crowded places are circulating in media. How much harm can this irresponsible behaviour cause?

Definitely, this will be a problem and we will be ‘inviting’ the next wave. Dr. Tedros A. Ghebreyusus, DG of WHO says, “The pandemic will end when we choose to end it. It is in our hands.” It means that we have to be careful. Especially in the upcoming festival season, we should not indulge in crowding because that is how the virus will spread.

Is it possible that no other wave will come?

New variants will keep on coming. We have two weapons which are the biggest protection. These are: wearing mask properly and actively encouraging everyone to get vaccinated. Then even if a wave comes, it will not be a big one.

    Windows 11 is the COVID-19 vaccine for your PC https://www.technologyforyou.org/windows-11-is-the-covid-19-vaccine-for-your-pc/ https://www.technologyforyou.org/windows-11-is-the-covid-19-vaccine-for-your-pc/#respond Mon, 02 Aug 2021 14:02:14 +0000 http://e428cda2-a9b2-4a19-a7b1-8b2502461dd8

We all know that one person who means well and has good intentions but doesn’t have the best communication skills. Perhaps, it’s a politician or a world leader that you know. They’ll tell you to do something because it’s for your own good and that if you don’t do it voluntarily, there’s an imminent danger that bad things will happen.

For example, if you do not get your COVID-19 vaccine, and you do not wear a mask in public places, with this new Delta variant, you stand a very good chance of becoming infected, possibly very ill with long-standing effects, and maybe become hospitalized and even die.

And at the very least, even if you don’t become ill, even if you are asymptomatic, you can become an active spreader of something that can potentially harm many other people, possibly those who are close to you.

Getting your COVID-19 vaccine is called being proactive. Wearing your mask is acting responsibly.

We don’t always like listening to people of authority, especially when we are asked to do something that doesn’t have immediately visible, tangible benefits. Doing things proactively, such as getting a COVID-19 vaccine and wearing a mask, requires having faith in someone being supplied with superior knowledge and expertise, such as a world leader or public health expert.

However, as we know, not everyone in a position of authority and possessing subject matter expertise is so polished they can package a message like this and make it palatable to every end-user.

With its Windows 11 rollout, Microsoft is not entirely different from that unpolished world leader or politician. Its communication skills have left room for improvement related to this significant and critical Windows upgrade. That’s something I think everyone covering this industry can agree on.

We know it means well, we know it has the expertise, but people will still challenge it and get all huffy when they are being told that Windows 11 is an essential upgrade related to securing the PC platform from advanced malware threats.

But to take advantage of the new security capabilities that shield you from these threats, your PC hardware needs to be able to support it. And that is not a message people want to hear.

Unfortunately, many legacy PCs, regardless of what antivirus solutions they may run and regardless of how functional and how fast they still run their application workloads, are highly vulnerable to these threats. And as they are not eligible for the Windows 11 upgrade, they are effectively immunocompromised.

Just like getting a COVID-19 vaccine and wearing a mask is proactive, so are the architectural changes required to upgrade to Windows 11. And in some cases, implementing those is going to need investment in new PC hardware. It will also require investing in further training and, potentially, some new deployment tools. It’s going to cost some money.

But as we know, implementing security changes in your large organization, small business, and consumer space is also not easy to sell. Anything that helps ensure business continuity and strengthen security resiliency from a threat that isn’t immediately visible will fall on deaf ears to all but the most cautious and conservative IT organizations, let alone end-users.

How many companies or individuals have we encountered as professionals that run their environments with no or untested backups, haven’t run a complete continuity and DR test in years, and then get burned for it? I mean, how many people did we know that ran with no antivirus or firewall for years before it was built into the foundational IT infrastructure because they didn’t want to pay for it or just felt it was a nuisance? I have dozens of stories as a former IT architect and consultant over my 30-year career to tell for this.

It’s tough to sell hardened security or any form of protection as the defining feature to the entire user population. So Windows 11 is also being released with an exciting new user interface to entice them to upgrade, whether by opting-in on hardware that can already accommodate the new OS or upgrading to new PCs.

Is this going to cost money to most organizations? Yes. Are a lot of end-user PCs going to need upgrades, costing people money? Yes. Spending money is painful, especially if we are talking about an upgrade to something strictly preventative in nature.

But do you know what is even more painful? A compromise — one which results in reputation loss, such as a publicly visible one that gets your organization on the news, such as a ransomware attack that holds all your IT assets hostage and stops your business cold for days.

Such an attack makes you and your company look stupid for not remediating it when it could have been prevented.

Best case scenario in this situation? Your customers think you’re a bunch of incompetent idiots. Worst case? Business-ending event.

The good news is that, like the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines, you can get the first “shot” now. If your hardware supports the new secure boot, virtualization-based security (VBS), and Hypervisor-protected Code Integrity (Memory Integrity/Core Isolation) you can turn it on in Windows 10 today.

And when Windows 11 arrives in October or November, get that second shot. And if any of your systems aren’t eligible, replace them. Immediately. Because that’s the proactive and responsible thing to do.

Gartner Consumer Survey Reveals Public Attitudes Toward Vaccination Requirements Vary by Activity https://www.technologyforyou.org/gartner-consumer-survey-reveals-public-attitudes-toward-vaccination-requirements-vary-by-activity/ https://www.technologyforyou.org/gartner-consumer-survey-reveals-public-attitudes-toward-vaccination-requirements-vary-by-activity/#respond Fri, 30 Jul 2021 11:09:09 +0000 https://www.technologyforyou.org/?p=175883 Legal & Compliance Leaders Are Weighing Up What Safety Measures Will Remain as Employees Return

Organizations forming or revising in-person workplace policies face difficulties accounting for disparate attitudes to vaccination requirements, according to a recent survey by Gartner, Inc. In a June 2021 survey of 346 U.S. consumers, Gartner found that public attitudes to vaccine checks for entry vary depending on the setting.

“Legal and compliance leaders for most organizations we speak to aren’t planning to mandate vaccines in their workplace,” said Chris Audet, senior director, research, in the Gartner Legal & Compliance practice. “This data suggests that public opinion on the issue varies significantly according to the setting.”

Respondents to the survey of U.S. consumers were more likely to approve of vaccine checks for entry in a healthcare setting (58%) than in an office (35%), yet a significant minority (25%) did not feel they should be required in any of the settings listed in the survey (see Figure 1).

Gartner analysts said it should be noted that the sample was broad, and many respondents did not work in the types of workplaces listed in the survey, therefore feelings on the issue might be different in individual workplaces.

“Vaccination requirement is clearly a divisive issue and mandating them could be problematic for companies for a variety of reasons including privacy concerns, staff resistance, and logistical issues,” said Audet.

Although most companies tell Gartner they do not intend to mandate vaccination for their employees, most did signal an intent to continue with some safety measures as workers return. Based on conversations with various organizations, Gartner experts have listed five strategies for managing return to work programs.

    1)    A/B Schedules

Organizations bring in employees on alternating weeks to reduce workplace crowding and better manage social distancing and hygiene measures. In some cases, this may also help to accommodate those who are prefer working remotely.

    2)    Hot Desks and Hotelling

Moving away from traditional assigned seating, organizations are exploring shared work areas or reservation systems for desks or meeting spaces, which also helps to comply with enhanced cleaning and distancing requirements.

    3)    Vaccine “Safe Floors”

Some have considered the idea of reserved space with reduced safety measures that are only available for vaccinated employees. Tracking vaccination status poses legal challenges in many jurisdictions.

    4)    Phased and Optional Return

Many employers are bringing back volunteers into the office first or approaching the return in phases. This helps to assess the efficacy of safety measures and how these new configurations affect employees and teamwork.

    5)    Redesigning the Workplace

Some organizations are fundamentally redesigning the office around collaboration rather than individual work, making that the primary function of an office in a hybrid strategy, dedicating more floorspace to collaboration and less to single desks.
